Talawa Productions Artist Horace Corn

In Jamaica, St Elisabeth Horace was born but moved to the eastern part of the Island at an early age. As a young man growing up in the beautiful, tropical surroundings, he enjoyed flowing river water, swimming daily and eating fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs. He made use of Mama nature in her full composition.

Being very athletic, dramatic and humorous, he always had a part to play. In concerts, dance and academics, Horace was very keen and tactful to project himself. He loved singing and bought himself his favorite reggae records from Alton Ellis, Gregory Isaacs, Burning Spear, Bob Marley, Bob Andy only to mention a few, not forgetting Black Uhuru. At this age most youngsters accompany their elders to church. Horace was one of them.

- “How did you feel in church?”... “I was very Irie, you know what I mean. Is the singing part mi did like, to make a joyful noise with music and dance, mi did love that, Jah man!...”

Very young, his mom moved to Kingston while he was still attending school, so he had to stay with grandma and finish primary learning. Traveling to Kingston to visit family and friends so often, Horace got familiar with the Big City earlier than later. Now he was really a bird flying on two wings! His horizons got broaden knowing the streets of Kingston, the independent city, uptown and downtown. Horace joined his mother and the rest of the family in Kingston after primary school. Convinced at the time that academic drenching could be of future significance, Horace indulged himself fully as a bookworm wanting to know what is there to know that he didn’t already know. He studiously went through many of titles, authors and publishers in search of academic insufficiency. Achievements, what? To achieve a Diploma in Master Radio and TV Electronics and be a high school graduate was not a delight. Only a sign of hard work and thoughts of keeping hunger away from the door in the future.

-“As this was no easy life, ruff and tuff”, he repeated.

MIGRATING TO LONDON

Horace Corn migrated to the UK in search of a better life, compared to…? In London he attended City of West Minister College, Edge Way Road, Paddington. There he achieved a Certificate in Micro Computer Technology (City and Guilds). He worked with video distribution and became the head of department with great responsibilities for goods going out. He enjoyed what he did then, until things came to an end. “Corn Tree Production” was born. It was time to make the next move.

Horace resort to his first hand experience in promoting music and artists as he had been doing back in Jamaica, where he held shows with numerous upcoming artists such as Admiral Tibet, Jessie Gender, Ronnie Twaite, Andrew Tosh (son of legendary Peter Tosh) amongst others.

In England Horace Corn continued his love for the music. As an ambassador, he held shows with Johnny Osbourne, Chaka Damus, Vivian Jones, Lloyd Brown and others. “Bógie”, the drummer from the group “The Specials” was very courageous and gave words of advice about music in the West Midlands, give thanks, bless, bless, raspect, much love, Spider!

Horace Corn did his first recording in 1993 at “Survival Studio” in Acton. Title “Baby you’ve been missing me” (12 inch) written, sung and produced by the man himself on Corn Tree Productions record label. The song got plenty airplay and nice paper and magazines write ups. The top reggae singer “Sanchez” had a chart topping song called “Missing you now”. This helped to boot the 12 inch single. Many radio Djs played both titles and became friends. The Cornseed grew to maturity and paved the way for other musical interludes. His second release was to be “Gunshot fe cease”, a 12 inch vinyl, AA side. Here he combined with lyricist “Rebellious” (King Kojo), 1994. 1995 was a very hard working year for the artist, recording in numerous studios like “Lion Roots” (Acre lane, Brixton), “Earl Studio” and “Progressive Sound Studio” in Battersea. 1996, Horace Corn released “She is my woman”, 7 inch vinyl. This song was just the kind of music for the UK- lovers rock scene. Then his voice was echoed on the air waves of radio stations all over the UK and elsewhere. Vibrantly, Horace got very busy doing guest appearances in and around London City.

Not being selfish, Horace invited many upcoming artists to his studio time. Those who had hard working mentality and perseverance were allowed to come and join him. They were many yelling the password:

- “Mr. Corn, big up Jah works!”

Corn muttered;

- “Mmm, I felt good…”

He later recorded many Djs and singers. “Singing B”, a very prominent singer, got a 7 inch release on Corn Tree Productions with the song “Life”. 1997 saw the release of a double 12 inch vinyl, with the two chart tunes “False Prophecy” and “Do Jah Works”. By now the vibe was at its peak! Corn recorded his album and it was due to be released in 1998. “The Most Corn” CD album was recorded live at Progressive Sound Studio in Battersea, London and at Lion Roots Studio, Acre lane in Brixton and engineered and mixed by Patrick. with the well brilliant Horseman playing drums and keyboard, Steven Wright on guitar, Roy on bass, H. Corn on percussion, backing vocals by H.Corn, Larna and Steppa. The album became available in record stores world wide that very same year. “Norman Grant” (Twinkle Brothers) is featured on “Let your love light shine”, (Track 9 “The Most Corn”) backing and playing congo drums, which gave the song that original, Studio One vibe groove, which is so well known and warmly loved by all music lovers.

After his album release, Horace went to Scandinavia and further into Europe to promote the musical vibes; Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Finland and Norway. He liked Sweden and decided to base and work there. Performing live gigs, appearing as guest artist all over Stockholm city. Traveling around Scandinavia, he noticed there was a lots of hardcore reggae musicians up those sides. Horace Corn linked up with perhaps all of them?! So one can firmly say that on every reggae fronts in and around Scandinavia Corn have been there planting and building the groundation up until present. Where Corn goes, the vibes flow, you know, naturally!

INTERVIEW

In 1997, Horace Corn played at Vasaparksfestivalen and Rinkebyfestivalen in Stockholm with the “Yarden Band”, and later at Pumpehuset in Denmark. All promoted by Sky Juice Promotions, DKsNr1. promoter. From The Reggae Moods Radio in Denmark, DJ Henning and journalist Gitte called him with great interest about helping to big up the reggae vibes in Dk. Of course Mr. Corn is always reachable. In Stockholm, where ambassador Corn based, the music was doing better than in Denmark. They wanted answers directly so they traveled all the way to interview Reggaemaster Corn and King Kojo (Rebellious). The sun was shining in Tallkrogen when they arrived. After they settled in, microphones were hurriedly taken out and aimed at the singer. Horace gave his most honest opinion about the way reggae was in Sweden and elsewhere compared to Denmark from his experience.

- “ Certainly the music scene here is bigger than in Denmark, as there are more artists, musicians and sound systems, he exclaimed.

- “Bob Marley lived here. Horace Corn is here. So the influence is very much stronger in Sweden.”

They chatted and laughed and Corn offered to help build the scene in Denmark as well. However, the two Danes hadn’t notice that Corn already had been up their streets in Denmark. His album had been on the shelves in “Hyde Park Records” store in Christiania since and he’d been performing there as well. Horace gave the two some new music for their “Reggae Mood”- radio and he left them with a promise to come visit soon. H. Corn, being a reggae ambassador who have great love for the music, decided to take on the mission of building the reggae scene in Denmark. He brought along many DJs, singers and players of instruments with him. He teamed up with other musicians from Dk and played at many different venues in Copenhagen, Dk. His recent performance in Denmark took place at Operan, Loppen.

CAPTURE THE VIBES

In March 2001, Horace Corn brought “Twinkle Brothers” to “Medborgarhuset” in Stockholm. This was highly appreciloved by the people of Sweden, whom all had been waiting to welcome the band to their home for over 20 year. Not only did Corn arrange the show, he also honored his guests by opening the show for the great outstanding Norman Grant, giving his love in the sweetest way, the only way he knows, with his smooth, sweet Corn voice. Drummer Kennett and bass player Lars from the now popular Swedish pop reggae group “Svenska Akademien” played brilliantly as “The Rulers Band”, Horace Corn’s backing band then. Ambassador Corn attained credible respect as a singer-song writer and producer for his remarkable works.

In 2003, Horace teamed up with “Selam Music Promotions” and brought “Junior Delgado”, a blessed singer from Jamaica, to Nalen in Stockholm. Wicked show! Jah bless your soul, wrests in peace, one love, Jr., see you in Zion, Ras. Jah live. Signed out for now. Wait! Where am I playing or

promoting the next vibe have to go fix it, see you there, Rasta live in a deep heart, surely a blessing.

RASTA LIVITY

Horace Corn is an upful Rasta man, who do not steal, cheat nor jealous others. I and I know that Selassie I is true living and mighty over all. Jah is the creator of I and I, Rastafari universally. King of kings, lord of lords, the conquering lion from the tribe of Judah has prevailed to be the prince of peace, ruler of earth. I and I do not eat bloody meat, neither drink alcohol, neither use drugs. I and I do not play any dishonest role to get material or vaniterial values. I and I work self sufficiently to acquire this livity I live. I and I make full use of life natural resources, mentally, physically and skillfully. As a Rasta man, I and I consume vegetables, herbs, fruits and ital juices. Cook I own food, bless it and give thanks for life. Who jah love, no man curse. To eat from your own hands, what a joy! In the midst of the ocean, the fools are still thirsty. I live not for greed, neither for shallow knowledge, which has no use, but to observe and broaden this scope of love for life to its mentionable pinnacle.

TALAWA PRODUCTIONS

From 2004, Talawa Productions, artist management and record-company, have been working with H. Corn and done numerous amount of successful shows together, plus a whole lot of media promotions. At the moment, Talawa Productions and the artist are preparing to release a 12” vinyl from his forthcoming album.
